(AP Photo/Yorgos Karahalis) ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Nearly two weeks after the country’s deadliest train crash killed dozens on Sunday, thousands protested safety flaws on Greece’s rail network . Demonstrators also demanded punishment for those responsible for the February 28 head-on collision between a passenger train and a freight train that killed 57 people. More than 8,000 people gathered outside parliament in Athens on Sunday to protest, police said. Protesters later marched to the offices of privatized train operator Hellenic Train. The company, which has been owned by Italy’s Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane since 2017, is not responsible for the maintenance of the rail network. The state-owned Greek Railways is responsible for maintenance. Authorities closed four metro stations on two lines that run through central Athens because of the protests. The rally was organized by civil servants, pro-communist unions and university students. In Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, about 5,000 people demonstrated to listen to speeches and chanted slogans such as “We will speak for all the dead”. The events earlier this week saw more than 30,000 people in Athens and 20,000 in Thessaloniki. Four people were detained in Athens, police said. A memorial service has been held for 12 students of Greece’s largest Aristotle University of Thessaloniki who died in a train collision. The country’s transport minister and top rail officials resigned a day after an inexperienced station master was accused of putting trains on the same track, charged with negligent homicide and other offences. A serious security breach on Greece’s busiest railway line has put the center-right government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on the defensive. He promised the government would fully cooperate with the judicial investigation into the crash. Elections are due later this spring, and opinion polls released in the past week showed the ruling Conservatives’ lead over the left-wing opposition narrowed by almost half compared with those released before the crash. ___Srdjan Nedeljkovic in Athens and Costas Kantouris in Thessaloniki contributed to this report.
